Atelier Article started in 2011. Lena and I (Dmitry) began making things by hand and selling them on Etsy — not because we had a business plan, but because we liked designing objects and wanted to see if other people would want to live with them.
Fifteen years later, it's still a small operation. Eight people in a workshop in Cherkasy. We design, weld, coat, pack, and ship everything ourselves. No factory, no outsourcing, no warehouse full of pre-made stock. When you order something, someone here makes it.
What we make
We started with furniture for vinyl record collectors — stands and racks designed for people in small apartments who wanted their records accessible, not stacked on the floor. That's still a big part of what we do. Over the years we added log holders for fireplaces, bookends in both steel and plaster, and a growing collection of metal bookmarks.
Everything is made from steel with a powder-coated finish, or in the case of our bust bookends, from plaster cast by hand. The plaster pieces are a mix — some are our original designs, some are careful restorations of antique busts we found at flea markets and brought back to life.
The people
Lena and I handle the design work. Denis has been welding with us for twelve years — he's been here almost as long as the workshop itself. Sergey, our CNC operator, has been with us for thirteen. Ann helps with design, another Ann runs operations, Roma handles packing and shipping. It's a small team, and most of us have worked together for years. That matters because consistency matters — every piece that leaves here has been through the same hands.
Why handmade
We get asked this a lot. The honest answer is that we like making things. There's a version of this business where we send designs to a factory and scale up, but then we'd be running logistics instead of building furniture. The tradeoff isn't worth it to us.
The practical answer is that handmade means we can control quality at every step — the welds, the finish, the edges, the fit. When something isn't right, we catch it before it ships, not after. And when a customer has a specific request, we can usually accommodate it because we're the ones doing the work.
