Search for 45 record storage and nearly everything you find is a box: white cardboard cubes, plastic cases, archival cartons. They protect the records, and for a sealed collection in a closet they are the cheap, correct answer. But if you play your 45s — if the jukebox habit is the whole point of collecting them — a closed box works against you. You cannot flip through covers, you cannot see what you own, and the box ends up under a bed.
We make open steel racks for vinyl in our workshop, and in 2025 a collector asked us the obvious question nobody's shelf answers: can the same stand hold my LPs and my 7-inch singles? Below is what makes 45s awkward to store, the options that exist, and the two-tower custom build that came out of that request.
Why 45s don't behave on an LP shelf
A 7-inch single is a different object from an LP in every dimension that matters for storage. The disc is 17.8 cm (7 in) across and its sleeve is about 18.5 cm square, versus roughly 31.4 cm for a 12-inch jacket. A single weighs around 40 g, a third of a typical LP. Put singles on a shelf sized for LPs and three things happen: they disappear below the sightline of the taller jackets, they lean and slump in the extra depth, and the row slides apart because there is nothing snug holding it upright.
The fix is not a special material — it is proportions. A 45 wants a shallow tier with rails close enough to keep the row vertical, exactly the way an LP wants a deeper one. Sleeved singles are thin, so capacity is rarely the problem: as a rule of thumb, 10 cm (4 in) of shelf run holds roughly 25–30 sleeved 45s.
The options: boxes, crates, and a dedicated tier
Honest rundown of what the market offers. Archival boxes are the cheapest and best for protection and moving house, and the worst for access. Small crates — including the 7-inch version of our carry crate — keep an active stack of singles portable and browsable. A dedicated 7-inch tier on a full-size stand is the least common and, for a mixed collection, the most useful: your entire library lives in one footprint, singles at the top where your hands already are.
That third option is hard to buy off the shelf, which is why it became a custom order.
Case study: two towers for Peter's LPs and 45s
Peter came to us with a large collection — reggae, soul, and a serious block of 7-inch singles — and asked for storage that would hold both formats without splitting the collection across different furniture. We settled on a pair of matching four-tier towers in black matte steel, based on our Four-Tier Vinyl Record Stand on Wheels, with one change: the top tier redrawn as a shallow 7-inch section that holds singles in two front-facing rows.

The same two rules as LPs: upright, never in leaning stacks, and each record in a sleeve. What differs is scale — a 7-inch single needs a shallower shelf or box sized to its 18.5 cm sleeve, so it stays vertical instead of slumping in space meant for 12-inch jackets.
Can I store 7-inch singles on a regular LP shelf?
You can, but they will lean, slide and vanish between the taller LP jackets. If you must share a shelf, group the singles between solid supports. A better fix is one tier proportioned for 7-inch records — that is exactly the modification we made to a standard four-tier stand in the build shown in this post.
How many 45s fit on a shelf?
Sleeved singles run roughly 25–30 per 10 cm (4 in) of shelf length. A 40 cm tier holds in the neighbourhood of 100–120 records per row, so a two-row 7-inch section like the one in Peter's towers stores a serious singles collection in the footprint of one shelf.
Do 7-inch records need special sleeves?
Yes — 7-inch sleeves, which are sold in the same two layers as LP sleeves: a paper or polylined inner against the vinyl and a clear polypropylene outer over the cover. Standard 45 outer sleeves are about 18.7 cm square and cost a few cents per record.
