Metal Bookend Plaque Doctors - Appropriate organising solution for your Goth book collection
Gothic themed modern bookends. A "plague doctor" was actually a medical physician who treated patients afflicted with the bubonic plague during outbreaks in Europe, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries. Plague doctors were hired by towns and cities to treat the infected, regardless of their wealth or social status. These doctors were often inexperienced or had limited medical knowledge, as the more established physicians typically avoided treating the plague due to its high mortality rate and contagious nature.
The costume - Plague doctors wore a distinctive costume to protect themselves from the disease. This included a full-length overcoat, gloves, boots, and a wide-brimmed hat. The most iconic part of their outfit was the beak-like mask filled with aromatic substances, such as herbs or spices, which they believed would purify the air and protect them from the "miasma" (foul-smelling air) thought to spread the disease. The costume also included a long wooden cane, which the doctors used to examine patients from a distance.
It is important to note that plague doctors' understanding of the disease and methods of treatment were limited, as the true cause of the bubonic plague (the Yersinia pestis bacterium) and its transmission through fleas from infected rodents were not discovered until the late 19th century.
